What is a sinus infection?
Sinus infection is perhaps one of the most common infections in the world, and it’s caused by the swelling of the sinuses, that results in fever, headache and of course, breathing difficulties.
Typically sinus infections are caused by bacteria or viruses, and the result is the inflammation of the sinuses that leads to the aforementioned symptoms and nasal discharge, runny nose, jaw pain, swelling of the eyelids and others unpleasant symptoms. The treatment for sinus infection is usually antibiotics in most severe cases, but, in mild cases home remedies can soothe and even heal a minor sinus infection.
Homemade sinus infection remedies
One of the most common home remedies for sinus infection is inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water or vaporizer. You can add chamomile in the water for a soothing effect.
Another potent homemade remedy that offers relief is a decoction of water and mustard seed powder. This decocts needs to be inhaled and it will clear the airwaves, making breathing a lot easier.
Other home remedies that provide relief are:
- Drinking grape juice
- Applying a paste of milk and ginger on the forehead
- Applying a paste of dried ginger, cloves and basil leaves on the forehead
- Inhaling the steam of eucalyptus oil
- Inhaling vinegar
- Drinking warm tea with a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon
Of course, keeping oneself hydrated during a sinus infection is a must, so drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day besides hot teas is required, alongside lots of bed rest.
It’s recommended to consult a doctor if the infection persists more than 5 days.
