Flying is wonderful, and many people enjoy it, but, there are those that find flying dreadful because of the ear pain that comes with it. This pain is nothing more than pressure that builds inside one’s ears; fortunately it is a temporary thing for most people, but for some, it can be quite disturbing. So, what can one do to avoid this ear pain?

Tips to avoid ear pain while flying:

  • The ear pain experienced when flying is caused by pressure changes and it can be easily avoided using specially designed ear plugs that will equalize the pressure in the ears. These ear plugs are easily available online and at local pharmacies.
  • Yawning also helps with ear pain, as it opens your ears and relieves the pain. For some that can’t yawn on demand a useful trick is to harden their tongue at the back as this forces yawning.
  • Another very common ear pain relief when flying is pulling on the nose and blowing slowly and gently while keeping the nostrils blocked. Blowing hard is not recommended as it can lead to ear drum damage.
  • Chewing gum or candy during takeoff and landing also helps, as this equalizes the pressure in the ears.

Following the above tricks will make flying more pleasant for those that suffer from ear pain due to the pressure changes experienced during takeoff and landing. It’s recommended trying one or all of the tricks, as one is surely going to work better than the other for you!
